Yoga and triathlon
To ensure that you swim, bike and run as efficient as possible, it is important that the body is flexible enough to allow the motions involved without any extra work. Through flexibility training you are able to make your movements as economical as possible.
A very good way of reaching high flexibility is through Yoga. Yoga not only works on the flexibility, it also teaches you to breath right and it can also teach you alot about concentration.
Here you can find the triathletes 9 reasons for doing yoga.
One good point to start is through reading The Athlete’s Guide to Yoga: An Integrated Approach to Strength, Flexibility, and Focus. The book is written by Sage Rountree who also is a triathlete. As written in her book “Her popular yoga classes for athletes draw students ranging from Ironman triathletes and Olympians to everyday cyclists, runners, and walkers. A successful competitor in running and triathlon, she has raced distances ranging from 5K to half-Ironman.”
I read the book and after following her advices my knee problems were gone in only a few weeks of Yoga practicing. This was for me a very large eye opener and I started reading other books on Yoga to learn more. I also took some Yoga classes to learn it hands on from experienced Yoga teachers.
Other books of interest are: The Yoga Bible, Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness
and Yoga Anatomy
.
Personallly I find the last book Yoga Anatomy a really interesting one. In this book the yoga postures are explained with full-color, detailed anatomical drawings and with clear, expert instructions. The book provides a deeper understanding of the structures and principles underlying each movement and of yoga itself. It’s a tremendous book!
So, if you have some joint of muscle problems today, it can be that these problems can be solved through yoga. Your movements will be more energy-efficient, which of course is good in sports.
Try Yoga and see what you think about it.
